Pelvic Ultrasound Q & A

What is a pelvic ultrasound?

A pelvic ultrasound is a leading-edge imaging system. It allows medical professionals to view, diagnose, and monitor women’s reproductive organs, such as the uterus, ovaries, the cervix, and the vagina, and detect a range of conditions, abnormalities, or confirm pregnancy.

A female pelvic ultrasound allows Dr. Yuri and his staff to detect and diagnose:

  • Pelvic pain
  • Abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Confirm pregnancy
  • Pregnancy problems
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Monitor the fetus
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Fibroids or other growths

A pelvic ultrasound can be performed abdominally or vaginally (transvaginal ultrasound) depending on each patient’s medical condition and needs.

During the procedure, Dr. Yuri applies a soft gel to the abdomen and places a probe over the treatment area, which transmits images onto a monitor. The transvaginal ultrasound procedure involves placement of a thin, lubricated probe into the vagina. A pelvic ultrasound is painless, and patients do not experience any significant discomfort.

During the procedure, all abnormalities are noted by the pelvic ultrasound technician and reviewed by Dr. Yuri. Typically, test results are available right away. However, in cases where further analysis is needed, test results may not be available for a few days.

How do I know I need a pelvic ultrasound?

Typically, your doctor informs you when you need to undergo the pelvic ultrasound procedure. However, if you're experiencing pelvic pain, abnormal vaginal bleeding, or you suspect that you are pregnant, you should schedule a pelvic ultrasound at Dr. Yuri's office today.
